Poor Recording Sound. Do I Need a Sound Card?

I started recording myself as I teach what I'm doing on my screen the past few weeks. The problem though is the sound which is fairly muffled and has a slight pop or kind of a crack or space in the sound. It's hard to describe, but it is not a smooth wave to listen to. In fact I would be skeptical of me as a listener based on the quality of sound even though it is intelligible and can be easily comprehended.

I bought a Logitech headset to hear and speak in at first, and it had that problem I described above. I thought, "cheap headset, better try another brand." I bought the Turtle Beach PLA headset to hear and speak into which was highly recommended all over the web, and it had the same problem. Now I just bought the Neewer Condenser Mic and InnoGear Phantom Box, and the sound has the exact same tick and slightly dampened sound stream.

When I speak into the headsets and the condensor mic, the sound comes out on the speakers clearly. It's perfect when it's live. It's only when I playback the recording that everything sounds so poorly. I have all of the feedback issues solved. It's not feed back when the mic can't hear the sound to begin with.

I have to believe after changing the external gear 3 times to no avail, then it's the sound card, or it's the way the Join.me screen share web page/app records sound. I work with a firm that uses the same brand screen share system, and they have no sound issues at all whether it's a live screen share or a recorded screen share. It's crystal clear.

I understand what the sound card does as far as speaker playback goes, but how does the mic system on a sound card work? I know nothing about this part of the PC.

Can I just buy something for $20 to solve the issue, and be on my way? I'm a logical budget man. I'm never going to pay up big for something that can be fixed for $20.

I did a search for $15 or less used sound cards with 7.1 channel with option to buy now to skip the auction. Do you guys see anything there that's going to make a smooth sound. I don't mean ultra studio quality pins and needles quality. I just mean good enough to get people to subscribe to me on youtube.

I keep saying it. I don't need the big dog hardware. I just need effective hardware.
Thanks for you time in sharing what you know about this technology.

I'm just using Join.me which is a screen share for $30 a month thing to record screen share sessions and meet with groups of people live.

The live sound is fine, but the recorded sound is sub-par. I just need good enough audio to get people to subscribe to the recordings on youtube.

To sum it I don't have wave files, and I'm not using an app like you mentioned.

Hello... THX I don't have this computer equipped to view/listen... well let me give you some basic voice recording terms/Tools that you might try to improve the Results with your existing MIC. B /

1) "Proximity effect" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proximity_effect_(audio)

2) We also use hardware/software "audio compressors" for controlling the volume of levels from high and low peaks... I would suggest looking into/experimenting with one that will easily connect to your existing OS/interface/mic.

3) we also use hardware/software "audio Equalizers" to notch out unwanted resonance/noise/Freq and Add character to the audio.

Some of your software may have these things already... and there are other freebies around... hardware wise you go down to a local music supply/pawn shop/Used outlets.

A guy on a different forum dropped an online audio recording website in the forum for me to try to see if it sounded better than the join.me app. It did, so we know it's the join.me app.

I'll contact them about it, and drop my $30 mth subscription.

I've bought 3 mic pieces only to learn that the problem was always in the recording app itself, but now I know a bunch of stuff about recording audio and podcast apps. So there's a trade off.

I like the Focusrite and Behringer audio input devices, and I might get the Audacity and OSB recording software that's free online. I'm not sure which screen share app I need to get though.

Hello... Yes the best production is one that is handled with your own software and hardware... B )

Audacity is a wonderful packed Audio package/tools/effects to learn and create with... you will be creating WAV files... these are un-compressed audio data (Orig) VS MP3... this is a DATA compression of the Original WAV file format.

Okay, thanks. Do you have any tips for doing screen shares live though? I'm setting up to do a daily showing or podcast to teach people to make money in the markets, talk about news, perspective, etc for 6.5 hours every weekday. Not the Join.me Hehe

Hello... I have not done this in my life... just music/voice/Live production... but if you watch some other podcasts, you will see the MIC's they are using... Electro Voice, Heil's, Shures, Rodes, AKG's... My eyes go directly to the hardware B D

Basically a Broadcast MIC will reduce/balance the proximity effect... audio Compressor will allow you to have a consistent volume output as you move your head and distance from the MIC... the EQ will allow you to custom adjust the character of your voice.

Hello... Microsoft's Skype is designed for multi person live video, for on-line discussions/gaming/chatting... I have used that B / but unsure if this is applicable for your use/format... there are free and payable versions of Skype.

Twitch is another one that provides broadcaster software and public space B /

Ya, it has to have the recordability and the live broadcast conference capability at the same time because it's live each day, and then it's archived on my youtube channel. Right? So the skype and the twitch I'm not so sure about. What do you think? Youtube live and archive or the other two?

Hello... ? like I said I watch POD casts on the tube and also Twitch... twitch does provide video archive... utube is the "standard" of industry? But it seems all multi person video discussions are using Skype as the interface, within the PODcast... But I'm a noob in use of these mediums. I just wanted to throw these in the Pot for your consideration B )
