my speakers stopped working for a while on my gateway laptop but the headphones worked so I didn't care. Now somehow the speakers work and the headphones do not. When I plug them in it used to tell me they were plugged in but that doesn't happen anymore either. I am hard of hearing so I need to use the headphones. The headphones are good as I just tried them on another computer.

When you plug in headphones it cuts off the speakers. Sounds like the headphone jack itself is sticking. Spray on contact cleaner is safest method.
