Hi all,

First of all the specs:

Motherboard: ASUS Z170-AR
CPU: i7-7700k
GPU: GeForce GTX 1070 Turbo
RAM: 2x Corsair Vengeance LED 3200MHz DDR4
PSU: Corsair CX850M

So I've recently built this rig (today, all new parts bar the PSU, she works. Did a test on another PC). Once everything was installed I turned her on buy no POST beep sounds. The RAM light was green, and green is good.

After it wasn't booting after I checked everything I decided to remove everything and reinstall the components. Now my RAM light is on a solid red. I checked around and did a few things such as checked connection, changed the combination of the RAM slots, tried it with a single RAM stick in every slot, but still got the solid red light. I've also triple checked the RAM was clicked in nicely, and it was.

I also tried the breadboarding technique, and still have the issue. I mean, it was green, and everything worked but I wasn't getting a POST, but now it's red after unplugging and replugging the components.

Anyone know what I should do? Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

The Noob Guy asking Noob questions.

Just so you know 99% of pc builders don't even look at the QVL and it usually works any ways. If it's going to cost you a lot wouldn't it be better to send the motherboard back because the Asus prime z270 isn't much more?

According to what I read prior to purchasing, all Z170's would be compatible. As for if they have updated the bios, I wouldn't know where to find that information. I assume I would have found out if the PC booted up?

Thank you for the quick reply.

They are compatible but they need the latest bios to work with kaby lake CPUs. From looking at some other posts the bios version should be the last 4 digits of the sticker on the motherboard. The problem is you can't update the bios without a working CPU.

I have a similar issue with an Asus Z170 PG board and 7700 processor. There the VGA light is solid red when breadboarding the setup with no beeps. It was recommended to replace the Bios chip (as I can not update) on the board by buying a new one prefitted-one from Ebay with the latest version. Not sure it will work, but ordered one today and hopefully arrives soon.

Interesting. Let me know how it goes. For future reference, what bios version did you need to get pre-installed to the chip you're purchasing?

On a side-note, I'm going to take my computer to my cousin's next weekend, he is a computer guru and will help me out. I'll keep you all posted. In the meantime if you have any further suggestions I am all ears :)

You can easily check this on the Asus support pages under the section CPU support of your motherboard make. For the z170 pro gaming this is bios version 3016. For your board you can have a look at https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/Z170-AR/HelpDesk_CPU/ and check for your CPU

I'll post an update in case it worked for me.

There are some good videos on YouTube to show how to change the bios chip. Doesn't look that complex. Hope all goes great. It's much cheaper than buying a skylake celeron or pentium just to update the bios. Swwatter hopefully your cousin will have access to a skylake CPU as that would be ideal. Good luck all.

Thanks jpe1701. I've worked out that my RAM isn't on the compatibility list for the Z170-AR motherboard... noob mistake.

My cousin is now no longer available to help me this weekend so I am about to take the PC to a tech store and get them to get it running. I will update you all as soon as I have the PC back and running to let you know what was wrong (at this stage I assume it's the RAM, but I also cannot update the BIOS, as jpe1701 said, so I'll get the tech guys to do it for me and purchase some new RAM sticks if required).

Thanks again all for your replies. I'll be in touch.

I've just dropped off the PC to the techies they said they've had heaps of the same issue coming in. It'll cost me $10 for their labour. I'll update you all in around an hour's time.

The PC experts have found the problem. Two pins where the CPU sits in the motherboard were slightly bent. The experts said out of 100 motherboards that they receive, 10 or so come in with already bent pins in the motherboard. I'll be returning the motherboard for a refund and probably purchase a Z270 instead. Thanks again to everyone's input :)
