I'm looking into a few options for our first real pc.
1. Build one from scratch and hope I don't screw up. I could use my existing cooler master 932 haf case, but like the newer ones with filters
2. Buy from xidax, they have a great warranty for life.
3. Kids wanna play cod and bf1
4. I want something that will last and not be out of date too soon.
5. Want to go intel and stay between 1200 and 1400

Woops, the ASUS Z270 or MSI's Z270 would be great. http://edgeup.asus.com/2017/01/03/z270-motherboard-guide/

If you're going for a $1200 - $1400 build, I would suggest you get a GTX 1070 or 1080, but that's just my opinion. Case also comes with 5 fans 120mm, but they are 3 pin meaning they can only be controlled via voltage.

thats ok, but if you were planning to overclock you can't because that is not an unlocked processor. that is what the k means at the end. I believe the k also has better single core performance

Want to be able to handle bf1 and cod as my son has shown interest in it over the Xbox 1 as the kids have to take turns playing their games. Would the GeForce gtx 1060 6gb be enough?

Yes. the GTX 1060 6gb will definitely, and the game would probably run at ultra around 60fps 1080p
