Hello, I recently ordered a a ga-z170-hd3 motherboard and a 7600k to go with it.

It is to my understanding that for these two to be compatible the motherboard will need a bios update.

But I'm a little unsure as to how this can be done.

A) will I have to use an already compatible CPU with the motherboard first to update the bios, then install the 7600k, or...

B) can I install the 7600k onto the hd3 straight out of the box, and then proceed to update the bios afterwards.

Any help will be much appreciated, thank you.

Yes you will need a compatible CPU to install before you can do the BIOS update. Gigabyte has a tool on their X99 boards that doesn't require a CPU or RAM for a BIOS update but it's only found on that particular series.

Yes and with size comes expansion slots. Full sized ATX boards usually have more of everything from SATA connectors to PCI-E slots.

I'm in the middle of a build with the same mobo and processor, except I didn't know that I'd need an older processor until now. How do I know what will be compatible? I don't have any other socket 1151 processors lying around and will have to order one, looks like.

You really should start a new thread but here's what you need.

BIOS revision necessary is on the right. It shipped with F3 looks like.

Nospacebar, the 100 series chipset motherboards (150, 170, etc) are compatible with intels 2015 6000 series CPUs (6600, 6700k, etc)

If you get a 200 series chipset motherboard it will be compatible with both 6000 series and 7000 series CPUs out of the box.

But if you get a 100 series chipset board it will be only be compatible with the 6000 series CPUs until you've flashed the bios to the latest update. After an update it will then be compatible with 7000 series CPUs
