If you are going Skylake or Kaby Lake (which you should at this point anyway), you definitely want to go DDR4. There are some Skylake motherboards that support DDR3-L (low-voltage, 1.35V DDR3, but yours probably isn't 1.35V).

A Haswell system could effectively use your old DDR3, but it's left with no further upgrade path either.

Well I'm replacing my old processor with an i7 so I need to get a new motherboard too...
