Hi,

A couple nights ago, we lost wifi connection in my apartment place. We can connect to the internet if we're plugged in directly to the Ethernet input on the wall, but when we try to go through the router, it doesn't connect.

We reset the router to its factory settings, but when we go through the router setup to connect it to the internet using a Ethernet cable, it says that the IP address was found but the DNS isn't working properly. The router can't connect to the ISP, even though we can connect directly from the input. We've tried turning the router off by unplugging and plugging it back in multiple times, tried different Ethernet inputs in the apartment, and we even went out and bought a new router that was a different brand (it stated a DNS error too). Since we live in an apartment, we don't have easy access to the modem, so we haven't restarted that yet. But, everything points to a DNS problem. I think trying a static connection might work, but I don't know what to put down.

The router we use is the Belkin 450 DB. I've called the ISP, which is a private company in Springfield, MO called Net Vision, but was put on hold and had to leave a voice mail. I was hoping you guys can find a solution to this, since they are very slow to respond back. Is it something that I can fix, or will the ISP have to fix it? Please let me know if you can help. Thank you!

You should be able to hard code the DNS in the router. Use 8.8.8.8 which is a public google one. You can also manually set it in your pc.

The isp may have some strange issue with their dhcp server. I tend to always use google dns rather than the one my ISP provides because it tends to be more stable. Your can also use 4.2.2.2 which is level3 if you do not like google and their data collection.

Can you show me how to do this? I know you can go into the adapter settings, and click the TCP/IPv4, but do I just have to put 8.8.8.8 in the preferred DNS server?

Done. Now when I try to go through the router set up, it says that the modem isn't talking. Then prompts us to restart it. However, like I said before, we don't have easy access to the modem. Is there a work around this or could this be the only way? Also, if we have to restart the modem, how can we still get internet if I'm directly connected to the input in the wall?

I had to get in contact with the ISP and they had to send a guy to check it out. It was somehow affected by a recent ice storm and a quick power outage. It was also indirectly connected with another person's router in the building. Don't remember too much more, but it was fixed.
