I currently have a failing internal HDD and I have ordered the replacement but I wont get here for awhile. I do have a 1TB external HD and I was wondering if and how I could just put the OS onto it so that I can continue to use my computer in the time being.

Solution
yes you can use that drive, but not in the state it is currently, if this is the ONLY drive you have and you fear loosing your operating system to a internal HDD crash, use a backup/iso software that generates an ISO on that external drive and creates a recovery CD that will access the ISO on your EXT-HDD. Go to Acronis True Image WD Edition Software and grab the WD free software and make a boot cd/ISo and get backed up until your next drive arrives.

You can move the system to the external, but you almost certainly can't boot from that and use it as you expect.
