After building a new pc i got a usb wifi adapter that works okay normally but whenever i launch some games the usb gets extremely hot and my internet connection goes to crap. I've tried using a usb extension to get it away from my computer but still no luck. Is it worth trying to fix or is it worth buying another usb adapter or should i just go for the Pci adapters? Also it would be much hassle to connect it through an Ethernet cable. Best guess, you have a lousy wifi adapter. Return the current one if you can and buy a new one. Or call the manufacturer for tech support, they may replace it.

PCI adapters can be better but not necessarily. Because they are positioned at the back of the grounded steel computer case usually stuck under a desk by a wall, the realized performance is directional. Which you should buy is depended on your situation.
