Hi there, my dell desktop crashed. I've got as far as Set Up, tried to install the drivers, it couldn't read the disc.

Started again, now it won't read the disc.

Welcome to Tom's Hardware, @nadine40!

I'd strongly recommend you share more details about your issue and your PC specs, so that we can be more helpful to you. If your system is not booting at all and it's not recognizing the system/primary hard drive, it's highly possible that you are most probably experiencing a hard drive failure. :( This would be pretty unfortunate, as it could mean that all the files/data stored on this HDD is lost and you will need a professional data recovery company, if you wish to retrieve it. If there's nothing important on it, you will still need to replace the failed drive with a new one, otherwise you won't be able to boot into your PC and make it work properly.

You could also try swapping the SATA cable...

You could also try swapping the SATA cable and the SATA port where the hard drive is currently connected to the motherboard.

Keep me posted with the details & good luck!
