By comparing a 1.3 GHz i7-7Y75 Coffee Lake and a 4.2 GHz Piledriver, it seems that the Coffee Lake CPU beats the Piledriver in single threaded performance which is inconsistent to Kaby Lake beating out Piledriver by 1.7-2.2× IPC (INT and FP respectively).

Isn't Coffee Lake also 14nm like Skylake and Kaby Lake? Perhaps Intel did (will) pull off such an amazing feat. (Maybe) Probably the IPC increases at lower clocks? Or has Intel been holding back their technology all these years to counter possible competition?
