Advice on using old, possibly bricked RAM in new Motherboard

Hey peeps!
Due to the "boot cycle"-problem with the MSI Z77A-G45 motherboard, I have to buy a new mb, and a new processor hence to the old 1155-socket. Since it´s more cost-effective, I want to go over to AMD, and I´m consider this mb: https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/970-PRO-GAMING-AURA/
and the AMD FX-8370 Black Edition processor.

Since this mb is using ddr3, I can still fit the RAM i used with the MSI A77A-G45 mb. However, I don´t know if I should count on that, since I can´t find my old RAM chips in the QVL of the new mb. But this doesn´t mean that it won´t work right, but what if my old RAM might be bricked? Will that harm the new motherboard, if I try them? When I tried to fix the "boot-cycle"-problem, I might have harmed the old ram, since it came out some smoke after turning up the voltage to the ram.

I have a set of each of these:

http://www.kingston.com/dataSheets/KVR1333D3N9K2_8G.pdf

So I guess my question is: Can I try my old ram on the new mb without harming it? Or do you recommend that I should buy new ones?

Solution
Throw that ram in the garbage. You definitely cooked it

And do not spend the money on an AMD FX platform. Its literally about to be discontinued, and its woefully outdated. There is nothing cost-effective about it.

You need to buy new memory anyway, buy a Skylake or Kabylake motherboard and at a minimum an i3-6100 it games faster than the FX-8370 anyway.

All was going well until I smelled smoke. There could be melted circuits in the module that when fed electricity can short possibly rendering the DIMM slot(s) unusable.

I'd not invest this much money and then flush it by attempting a not so smart procedure.

I agree. Buy new RAM.
Also I have been using the ASUS 970 Pro Gaming Aura for 6 months. Very nice mobo. I think you might find the FX-8350 a better bargain.
Most benchmarks put it as equal to or sometimes slightly faster than the 8370.
Or...wait a couple of months and see what the new AMD Ryzen CPUs and mobos offer.

Cost effective? How is it cost effective? Do you get more done with the 8 core 8370? It looks to be about $184. The i5 6500 is $199. Are you video editing, graphic design, PS and using other programs that love many cores and hyperthreading? Should you be a gamer the i5 6500 is a CLEAR winner.

Thx guys. If the FX-8350 is as good, I might consider an upgrade-package from a regional store, consisting AMD FX-8350 CPU, Asus 970 PRO Gaming/Aura, 8GB RAM, and 120GB SSD for 420 euro.

Or what do you guys think, add some cash to get a i5 or similiar, or wait for the next AMD release?

EDIT: Trying to answer everyone at the same time here ^^. I do everything from gaming to 4k editing.

The IDEAL solution is the i7 6700. BUT cost is king in this question. What's more important to you? Quicker editing times or higher FPS? As a gamer who will be editing soon I easily pick FPS. I can be doing other things while it's crunching away at data. When I'm gaming I want to GAME. Would I wait for Zen? If I wanted to wait until the end of April I would. That gives time for dust to settle and any problems to be discoverd. Some Intel prices will probably go down as well as AMD's.

Add some cash to get an i5 and/or wait for AMD Ryzen which is releasing in the next 2 months.

As I said do not spend any money on an AMD FX platform, its a waste. Especially for gaming and 4k editing!

Two months feels like a loooooooong time without a desktop, so I think i´ll get the i5-6600k with hm... I´m not sure, maybe the MSI B150 Gaming M3?

No reason to buy a k processor with a B150 motherboard, you can't overclock on it. On top of that the Gaming M3 motherboards are crap.

If you like MSI get the Z170 Gaming M5. You can overclock on it and its better quality.

I´m not a MSI fanboy, it´s just what Im used to. Im open to try something else. Do you have any suggestions on specific boards at around 120 Euro?

That one has a bit to few usb inputs for my taste. I´ve done some more searching, and considering the msi z170a gaming pro carbon: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/Z170A-GAMING-PRO-CARBON.html#hero-overview
and this ram: http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/ct2k4g4dfs824a

Thoughts on that? Thank you so much for your assistance so far. I know i´m going out of the topic of this thread...

Yes thats a good choice of board. Its a bit more expensive, but it is a real good board.

Crucial makes good basic ram, that ram should be fine but you may want to consider their Ballistix line, it has heat spreaders and looks nicer. While you won't be overclocking it it does help to keep it cooler.

Yes, I chose the basic model since it´s cheap and had about the same specs as some of the more expensive ones. However, I might choose the Crucial Ballistix Sport: http://uk.crucial.com/gbr/en/bls2c8g4d240fse It´s still the same price, just twice as much memory. I guess it´s better in the long run.
