[CPU Upgrade] i5-4460, i5-4690, FX 6xxx Series or FX 8xxx Series?

So I have an RX 470 and seems like my Athlon II x4 640 CPU is bottlenecking it at times, I want to upgrade my processor that will not bottleneck my RX 470, I just bought this ASRock mobo a few months ago but I can just give it to my brother, I want to reuse my DDR3 Avexir RAM so I opted not to go to the Skylake lineups(they only support DDR3L and DDR4, some consumer Skylake boards have DDR3 support but Intel doesn't recommend it) from the blue team and wanna go to Haswell, any suggestions?

Solution
Go for a Haswell CPU n mobo. You can reuse the RAM. Look for a i3 and ok mobo. Can you list some choices?

And a "Hello" from your neighbors North of you in Taiwan :)

The i5's here actually cost a little less than 200 bucks :) Ok so this means I may need to look at the blue team for answers

Hello neighbor! :) and a happy new year! I am also looking to do some low level content creation which was why I needed the additional real cores over hyperthreaded ones in i3's which is why I went on to look at the i5's side of things, at first I wanted to go AMD since I am a fan hahaha but now open to the options from Intel :) Haswell it is then, thanks in advance!

Which ones from the i5's from Haswell is good for me? And if possible, looking for a not-so expensive mobo but can do quadchannel as I might increase my RAM in the future :)

i5-4590 is great CPU. My brother and I put one in his system recently. As for RAM. Think about how much RAM not "quad" channel. I mean, that RAM is best in pairs unless x99 mobo (which is expensive and needs $$ CPU). You can always add more RAM as long as you have the RAM slots. So, get 8gb RAM sticks and get 2x8gb to start and add more as needed.

Oh ok i understand, thanks! Is there any board out there that is not too expensive, but has 4 RAM slots that has socket LGA 1150 that you can recommend? By the way in that configuration, if i add 2 more RAM sticks, does it still function as dual channel? I am a bit confused as to what quad channel is versus dual channel, thanks for helping me learn man :)

Unfortunately only i5 4460 and i5 4690 and its K variant is available here, once they get a hold of the latest gen they might phase these out so I wanna grab them before that happens, thanks for the information! Greatly learning from you guys :)

Yes, they both function as dual channel, so you have 2 sets of dual channel ram, which is a little different than quad channel, if you want more details read that article I linked.

Ok thanks, greatly appreciated :) By the way can you suggest a great but not so expensive motherboard?

The FX series are old but you can still have good performance. The FX series could underperform under CPU bound games at lower resolution, but have stronger multitasking ability ( you can use multiple programs at once without slowdowns).

I recommend the FX 8350 setup only if you can buy it at a very cheap price. If you aren't on budget, pick the Intel.

The FX 8xxx has strong performance under DX12 games.

I have these reasons to stay away from the fx series sadly, I've been an AMD fanboy for years, but realized now why Intel keeps handing them their rears:

1. Only a handful of games perform using all cores(those vulkan and dx12 titles), so intel's significant single core performance really is tempting
2. The fx series is phased out already from where i am
3. Ive been doing a lot of research to make sure I spend right, seems like the i5's(haswell) been kicking the fx series and blowing it out of the water in almost everything
4. AM3+ boards has no native support for USB 3.0 and PCI-E x16 3.0, which is available in the haswell board that I am currently considering now
5. I do medium-level multitasking, so a quadcore will do, the fx 6xxx as I have read is not a true hexa-core and the 8xxx series is not also a true octa-core but I will read up on that as I havent really dug into it deeply yet

Thanks for the graphs and explanations! But I figured its time to taste what the blue team has to offer :)

errr... natively, if you mean that the chipsets don't offer USB 3.0 and PCI 3.0 you are correct but there are alternatives:
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5655#sp

I have this mobo and USB 3.0 is available. As for PCI 3.0, is there a big difference with PCI 2.0?
As for multitasking, trust me, the FXs are as good as any iX Intels, if not better. And they do have 8 cores, but one scheduler for 2 cores, so...
Anyway, the OP should wait for RyZen or get an i5/i7 depending on his wallets and needs.

No discernible performance gain from pci-e 2.0 to 3.0, as I have said, I still intend to reuse my other components save the mobo and cpu, and no I am not a high-level multitasker hahaha :) and my needs depend on single core performance, sure the fx series are good im not taking anything away but on single core perfomance, which most of my activity heavily depend upon, leans more on that and not too much on multitasking. The way i see it if i go for fx i'd just see gains on the multitasking side but that's it. I have been an amd fan for a long while now but i guess its time to open myself to new options as i love tech in general.

Nope, no ryzen for me as it might support DDR4 only, i plan to reuse my DDR3 Avexir RAM and still wanna use Windows 7, which the new architectures from Intel and AMD are pushing out their support on. By the way, i am the op ;)
