I'm trying to connect my surface pro 3 to my gtx 960 for visual output so i can screen record for speed paints.

I've tried using OBS (even at 30fps) on the Surface while painting but at the sizes I work with it bogs it down significantly and makes single brush strokes take 5-10 seconds on large canvases (24"-36"). I thought it would be easier to have my main desktop do the recording via screen-casting the surface pro monitor.

I'm going to try the Mini-displayport - DVI 1.2 since that seems to be the easiest solution.

I haven't setup for multiple screens before so i may be completely wrong in how I'm going about this.

I am not looking to use the dock since i like to work with the surface at it's lowest angle while painting.

Any pointers or advice would be appreciated.

You are not connecting the surface pro to the 960, you are using a remote connection to the computer which is using the card. It will be laggy. If you want to use your desktop for painting, get a drawing tablet and connect it to the computer.
