my first SLI build and i wasnt comfortable to do it on my own so i had the store do it. but my Mobo is an MSI X99 gaming carbon pro with two MSI 1080s' and as well at the i7-6850k 6 core cpu. my question is they put the first card up top and the second card looks to be on the third slot. my assumption is to allow for proper cooling as i have the red and black GTX 1080s'. can some of you tech gurus please help as to if this is really getting the MOST out of my two cards? if you want photos heres my pc partpicker link https://pcpartpicker.com/b/nfr6Mp

You have the right bridge for a pair of 1080's and the right CPU to get the most bandwidth out of them. You have the best possible setup with them and are definitely getting their full potential. The only place to go now, is overclock!

SLI would not work if the card dropped to 4x. It requires 8x minimum.

Otherwise I agree, this is set up properly and the best way to go to SLI a pair of 1080's.

I also agree a single card is usually better, however a pair of 1080's in SLI will outrun a Titan X and do it cheaper. Just that unfortunately not all games support it.

Name a game that explicitly doesn't support SLI... One that is worth playing and not some unoptimized indy/greenlight/early access.

I mean cmon - you can force it in every game out there as long as it runs in a full screen window.

SLI does in fact work at 4x, you will not get a system resources error. It will work - but a GTX 1080 will not be able to run at full speed at 4x, which is why it is important to make sure it is running at 8x or 16x.

You do have a HB bridge right? IT should look something like this:

There are no SLI Certified motherboards that run a second SLI Slot at 4x. Is it possible to get it working? Sure anything is possible, but in his case his board IS SLI certified and he has a 40 lane CPU, so based on the specs of the board even if he populated 4 slots with GPUs the minimum any of them would run is 8x. Even with a 28 lane CPU He would need to populate 3 GPUs at 8x before 1 of the slots drops to 4x. So hence no reason to confuse people with a highly unlikely possibility.

And yes you can force it, sometimes it works fine, sometimes it creates wacky graphical glitches (Mortal Kombat is a good example, as is Metal Gear Rising Revengeance - 2 pretty well known games :sarcastic: ).

While you were attacking my post you failed to notice i still in the end basically agreed with you, its a good setup and its working fine.

theyre both running at x8 right now. i was thinking to move the second card to the pcie 3 slot to allow both at x16 but that would make the cards practically touching. im not sure how cooling would be but right now i havent hit above 72 degrees!
