I picked up this older server on amazon running dual E5540 xeons and was wondering if it will be capable of hosting an ARK survival evolved server with around 20 people. Internet connection wont be an issue with my modem and router equipment or internet plan but im curious about the systems capabilities in this regard. This will be my first time working with servers, thank you in advance.

Gentlemen,

First off thank you COLgeek and slumy_57, this input both of you gave was helpful and insightful.

Now on to what I've learned during this process with this particular system.

First, excellent piece of equipment for the cost of $150 (amazon) 48gb of additional ram $80 (amazon). So the whole setup was $230 , hard to beat. All components work perfectly and upon inspection it is obvious a full inspection and service was done before this was resold to the general public. This appears to be one of the thousands of racks recently decommissioned by Google or Facebook to make way for new equipment.

Secondly, while I am not a new or novice user of computers and their respective operating systems, relearning command prompt was the...

Sorry for the delayed response, life got in the way.
I had contemplated Linux Ubuntu or Windows 7 ultimate (since i have an old copy lying round) I haven't worked with Linux since Red Hat about 10 years ago and wasn't entirely sure about its long term compatibility for additional games in the future. I could always run a dual boot but it seems unnecessary.

I think you'll be good hardware wise, I have a coworker who hosts an Ark server, and the biggest resource used is ram. While playing the game on the host, he peaks at around 15 gigs used with 6 or 7 people playing. You have way more ram than that, so I think you'll be good.

Sorry for the delay. The server works perfectly. I decided to run linux ubuntu after all. I am currently running two concurrent instances without lag or resource issues. Will be adding a third instance this weekend and will update again afterward.

Secondly, while I am not a new or novice user of computers and their respective operating systems, relearning command prompt was the most challenging part of this experience . Dos was my first PCs operating system so most of it was just becoming reacquainted. Linux uses different commands but is the same principle and of you understand one you can learn the other. That being said, great recommendation COLgeek.

Finally, if you are planning on taking this path as I did your going to have to become familiar with writing script for executables. It's not difficult but does require some patience, and will need to be tailored to your individual needs. I have two soon to be three individual instances combined into a cluster to allow interserver transfers.

If there are any other questions I can help with feel free to ask.

Glad everything worked out... I just bought a HP G6 also with 24gb ram with 2.93mhz clock speed and would also like to run two or three Ark servers in a cluster for family and maybe one Dark and Light server. Only planning on 8 to 10 players. Question is I will be using Ark Server Manager and Dark and Light server manager program to initiate the servers and maybe running windows 2008 or 2012 server. Have a 50 down and 5mb up internet connection. Most of the time will have 3 or 4 players playing from inside the house...

Do you see any problems ? Will start setup next week. It also comes with 10000 rpm hard drives. Will switching to SSD make a big difference ? Paid about $160 on ebay for the server. Memory is expensive for 2gb increments which it comes with so hoping 24gb should be enough.
