So I have all the parts I need to upgrade my motherboard and cpu. I'm gonna be using an Asus Z270-P motherboard with an i7 7700k. The only issue is that my current AMD build already has windows 10 installed on my hard drive, and I'm not sure how to re-install windows onto the new board. I already bought a new copy of windows 10. Is it as simple as installing the new mobo, putting the new windows 10 disc in and installing through BIOS? Or is there a part to this that I'm missing?

You didn't need to buy a new copy of Windows 10, you could have tied your existing Windows 10 license to your Microsoft Account and then you can change your hardware all you want and Windows will activate using your Microsoft Account. If you bought an OEM Windows 10 license and aren't selling the computer afterwards then you aren't properly licensed anyway. Either way you wasted your money, sorry.

If you don't want to reinstall all your stuff after a fresh install, and want to use your existing Windows 10 install, you can get it working if you uninstall the chipset and other AMD specific drivers before transferring the drive to the new setup.

Really? Well shoot. I had looked all over forums explaining that a copy of windows is attached to the motherboard, so a new copy of windows was required for a new motherboard. Oh well, lesson learned I guess.

^ what he said about your lisence is correct. I asked this question recently as I'm in the same boat. There's some good youtube videos walking you through it. if you didn't open your disc maybe you can return it?

The same tutorials show you how to download and burn the windows10 iso file to a dvd or to a usb stick for a fresh install. bios is different but there's usually an option on post where you can select your boot (dvd instead of hd).

I recommend fresh installs. just eliminates problems when troubleshooting.
