Is my CPU too weak for modern day titles?[i5-2400]

So my i5-2400 and rx470 can run most modern titles well at a capped 60 frames on low-med settings, but I recently purchased the new HITMAN and performance is crippling at 25-50 frames on all low settings at 1080p. I haven't tried games like The Witcher 3 or GTAV, but this performance is a bad omen.

My question is that if I should upgrade to the i5-3570 or the i5-3570k, or is the new HITMAN just un-optimized like crap and I should stay like I am for now?

Wouldn't push a 500w psu seeing 470 says 500w min and uses 250-300w leaving 250w for the rest of the system, it's not much and an oc does consume quite a bit. A quality 600~650w would be more ideal.

http://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator Use this calculator to get an idea for overclocking. Add the cpu, 2500k for example an average overclock of 4.2 ~ 4.5GHz will be around 1.35 vcore. 3570k 4.2 ~ 4.5GHz average 1.25v to 1.27v.

Would need a decent cooler though like the evo 212 or noctua d14

You're right about the k version though besides having an unlocked multiplier it's stock speed is higher than non k's by about 400 or so MHz roughly.

I'd check your cpu usage in different games to get an idea the kind of partnership there...

that is a 4 cores cpu, running at 3.1ghz, remeber that some games does work better on nvidia gpus than on amd gpus

having said that, on a older mainboard like yours with ddr3 only, prhaps a i7 could be better, the extra threads should help a bit

anyway, you socket, a lga 1155 is quite old now and upgrades will become expensive and less rewarding in terms of results

consider a upgrade to a i5 but new generation 1151 kaby lake cpu, mainboard and ddr4, that should give you the results you want

I have already thought about that, but a full system upgrade is simply not a financial option for me right now. New ram, new cpu, new mobo. Too much. An i5-3570k is something I can afford though, with options starting at around $130 at the buy it now option on Ebay. I simply want to know if anyhting will be different though, because even in the new generations I've read that Intel CPUs barely change much aside from power consumption efficiency.

You can check cpu usage using msi afterburner with rivatuner, there are youtube guides how to set it up. If the cpu usage is 100% or v.close it's a bottleneck and you want gpu 100% or almost is the dream.

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/363?vs=287 Not a lot of difference between just the cpus. When it comes down to powerful graphics cards, you don't want graphic settings too low otherwise you'll shift more work to the cpu, and if it's not fast enough, cpu usage sky rockets.

2500k/2600k and a good cooler to overclock 4.2~4.5 would probably be the only thing you could do in terms of a possible bottleneck or wait for driver updates from AMD.

*Check Ivy Bridge cpus (3570k) will work with your motherboard. Some wont, some need a bios update.

I've done my research and the 3570k will work with my stuff. Thanks for putting the usage into lamence terms though. I've heard all this information before but I never quite understood why the usage differences mattered so much.

I'll probably have to rely on stock power from a CPU though. My psu is only 500w and I've been told it's atleast a 600w minimum if I wanna get into OCing. I've also read K CPUs are faster even at stock simply because they're unlocked though.

Disregarding my limits though, would the 2500k or the 3750k be the better option though, and I might as well ask you right now if I could OC with a 500w psu. If I can't, then I'll just settle with the non-k 3570 since the 2400's 3.1ghz and age seem to be the combined factor to why newer games run like ass on my system, I did get the 2400 used and it has been a while now.

I run 2600k @ 4.5 and 1070 there's no bottleneck. I get the same fps numbers as other people with the same gpu running in newer systems.

Could always do a clean Windows install, maybe its due? And a blowout :) are you keeping an eye on your cpu temps?

Thanks for that mass of info then. I've learned more today than I have in the 6 years I've been watching generic videos on the topic of bottlenecking and PC building in general.

My temps are running fine btw. I also upgraded to Windows 10 from the free period so there's not much I can do about that until I get myself a retail copy of my OS.

I have the Alpine 11 Pro Rev 2 by Arctic, a budget cooler. So you've confirmed that the K CPUs will be fine as long as I do not OC them until I get a PSU upgrade of atleast 100w more than my current PSU, but which of the K CPUs in the 1155 lineup would be best in your opinion? The 2500k, 2600k, or the 3570k?

For real this time, this is the final question I've got to ask on this topic.

Forgot to reply to your Win10 dilemma. https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/software-download/windows10

Media creation tool can create a dvd or usb for you. The size required for both is in the link. If you want to try usb make sure it's formatted in fat32 as bios wont read ntfs and your bios can boot from usb.

Use the media creation tool to download Windows 10 (Make sure to choose 64bit) and it will take you through a process and make a DVD or Usb into a bootable installer.

Windows 10 registers your motherboard and license online for activation so if you reinstall Win10 skip when it asks for a product key, your old one wont work here. It will activate again once your online.
