Permanently assigning a drive letter (under Windows) to a USB hard / flash drive?

Hi All,

I am wondering if it possible to permanently assign a drive letter to a USB connected hard drive or storage medium (flash drive, etc.)? I believe that each drive has it's own unique hardware identifier and using this information I would like to assign a drive letter under Windows (7, 8, 10).

This is required because I utilize RoboCopy to perform backups, and each time that I connect the same hard drive to perform a backup it more often than not receives a new drive letter under Windows.

Each time that Windows assigns a new drive letter I need to edit my backup (batch) file, and I would like to avoid this in future.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Davo

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your interest in my post; choosing A or B was the answer here, as neither is used by Windows anymore (at least not automatically!) since the demise of the floppy drive!

Say you have 2 flash drives. You assign your "backup drive" as D. The "next one" you plug in will be E. If you don't specifically assign E to the "next one", it will automatically assign the letter each time you plug it in. So, you go out of order and plug the "next one" in before the "backup drive", it will take up your D letter and force the "backup drive" to become E.

I usually just assign my non permanent backup drives as something at the bottom of the alphabet like X. Assigning the letter does stay with the drive on the machine you have assigned it on, unless you have the situation above.
