I know I have a 1tb HDD which is down to only having 50gb left... I found a 2TB HDD 7200RPM on sale where I live for 110 NZD from 210 NZD and I was planning on picking it up... how do I know what HDD I have? (the model, brand etc...) I bought my PC prebuilt years ago, also how do I know what type of HDD are compatible with my PC (for example putting a i7 4790k onto a motherboard with an am3+ cpu socket wouldn't work)? how many more I can hold and all that...?

Thanks for any help :)

Welcome to Tom's Hardware, @Cullen_2!

All new mechanical hard drives incorporate SATA connectivity which is backward compatible with its previous or next generations. If the PC system was bought in the last 10 years, it most probably has SATA II (3 Gb/s) or SATA III (6 Gb/s) ports, which allows you to switch to any sort of SATA Hard drive.
As long as your motherboard incorporates the same SATA II or SATA III ports, you shouldn't face any compatibility issues with the drive, regardless of brand or model. As for what brand and model you are currently running, you could check your Device Manager and see the name of your HDD model in the 'Disk Drives' drop-down menu.

However, don't forget to keep at least one more duplicate of your files stored on a different drive (off-site). Having duplicates of your files in different locations is what will save you from any potential data loss.

Hope this helps. Keep me posted if you have more questions.
Good luck! :)

So do you know if this HDD

would work with this motherboard?

I feel like it will but I just want to double check :)
