So, I do know that the i5 6500 has a better overall performance when compared to the i5 6400, but the thing is: the difference between the 6400 and the 6500 is $60-80 where I live, so I'm wondering if the difference between these two CPUs really that big of a deal on battlefield 1 to justify the way higher price?

(I'll pair it with either a gtx 1060 6gb or the rx 480 8gb)

Solution

Honestly, you will be losing 2-5 FPS versus the 6600k. So it's nothing truly anything to worry about. I've seen stabled gameplay with eh i3-6100.
Battlefield 1 is very CPU heavy and having the extra clockspeed would certainly help you, but I'm not sure if it would make enough of a difference to justify a $60 to 80 premium. I'd say go for the 6400, but be prepared to encounter some CPU related framerate dips in some of the larger multiplayer maps.

@supernova well, i've already seen some good amount of gameplay footage using a i5 6400 and the frame rate was pretty stable and high (paired with the rx 480 or the 1060) on ultra so I'm not sure if I'll face many drops...maybe I'm wrong, idk. I wanted the i7 6700 but that's way above my budget atm.

I'm just afraid of buying the 6400 and ending up with bad frame rates on ultra or very high

i5 is i5, even if you have those 300mhz more it would still be just an i5. but i7 would be a different story. So no it's not worth extra 80$ for 300mhz, u better spend that cash for an ssd or better GPU.
