RAM working fine (i think) in slots B1 B2 C1 & C2 Is this a bad idea??

My Asus Rampage ii Extreme is POST'ing all 14 GB of RAM when i install 4gb in slot B2, 4gb in slot B1, 2gb in slot C2 and another 4gb in slot C1 NOW, is there anything wrong with this? The pc works perfectly fine, even though i have not touched the BIOS! Slots A1 and A2 dont seem to be working on the MB. Weird i know, but this pc seems to love odd configs! It is running windows 10 pro 64. And it has not got the latest (and last ever) BIOS update, as windows 10 seems to run sweet as a nut with an old version!
Sorry to bang on about an old board, but it does run all my games very well in 1080 ect...

Anyone that shares an interest in older setups, i would love to hear your thoughts!

All the memory has to run at a the same speed. The memory controller has to synchronize the memory refresh function across the entire bus, so it all will be running at the slowest speed of any memory installed.

If you don't know enough to dig deeper on a subject, read up on it and keep digging. That's the only way to learn it right. That's what got me into this systems admin job. :)

Well, without matching DIMMs across the channels, it won't address the memory in even dual channel mode. It will pretty much just stay addressing one channel at a time. The best layout would be to put the 3 4GB DIMMs in slots A1, B1, and C1, and leave off the 2GB DIMM. If you can't get the A channel slots to work, then keep them in pairs across the other 2 channels, with either 4 4GB DIMMs or 2 4GB and 2 2GB DIMMs. Mismatching them around like you have now will really hurt your performance.

Hi, cheers for the response mate, all that made sense to me, so I have removed the 2GB module (as it was a spur of the moment thing anyway) and will probably just for the hell of it, invest in another 4GB stick and call it quits. I have now just got 3x 4GB sticks in: B1, B2 & C1 And again the pc is nice and happy with all 12 G's showing and being used correctly. Just one other thing before I go and stop bothering you with my antique setup, would I gain anything at all by enabling the X.M.P profile?? I have checked the BIOS tonight and corrected the frequency to 1600Mhz and made sure the voltages are correct.

Cheers for your ears again pal.

Depends on the CPU. The quad core CPUs on that platform actually stepped down to dual channel mode only when the memory speed went above the stock 1066, so XMP might actually hurt your performance. The six core variants kept the memory in triple channel mode even up to 1600.

Ah, ok, I think I get what you mean. Although my memory according to CPU-Z is only running in dual channel mode anyway!... But I think a lot of what I am trying to do is irrelevant because of the RAM being run in (technically) the wrong slots?
Oh, and by the way, it seems as though only one stick is running at the correct 800Mhz!! I don't know enough on this subject to go much deeper! :(
Many thanks again pal.

Just as an update, i ordered another 4GB stick just for the hell of it last night because what you said about running the sticks in pairs really made sense to me!
Also what you were saying about digging for info and education could not be more true! I have been into my pc's for as long as i can remember, but the motherboard technicalities are something i would love to learn, and one of the main reasons i bought this rather ageing gaming pc was to have some fun and experiment with different theories.
Thank you for your wise words, and i hope to learn much more over the comming time!

Have a good day,
K
