Currently have an I3 4150. Which of the above processors would be the better upgrade?

I do mostly gaming; however, I run a plex server for my living room Roku and do some video transcoding/editing (just home movies).

I can get the i5 for $160 and the xenon for $240.

The Xeon is far more future proof at the end of the day.

Its essentially an i7 with no integrated graphics.
Bear that in mind ,it may bother you it may not.
If you were using quicksync for anything video related it won't work anymore.
If you were transcoding / editing via CPU based software then the hyper threading will make a big difference .

The only real advantage to the Xeon E3 series is the use of ECC memory, which helps with stability and accuracy. It's not really that useful for desktop work, but good for server work when multiple people are accessing it. There are no performance advantages to it at all.

Wow, I didn't spot that this model doesn't have graphics either. Good catch. I thought only the ones that ended in 5 didn't have graphics.

Appreciate the answers. My primary concern is whether spending the extra $90 (after taxes) will offer a comparable return on performance.

Do you feel that the xenon would prevent me from needing to upgrade the Cpu in the next 5 years? That may justify the price difference.
