Rear surround speakers

I just hooked up my rear speakers and they only work when the receiver is in tuner they don't work when watching a movie or TV. Any suggestions

Try a different surround sound mode on the main unit that powers the system.
The rear channels on movies and TV are not used most the time. They come on only for special effects.
When used for music (which is stereo) there is usually a music mode that will create artificial surround sound that has the rears on most of the time.
