Please note that I am not familiar with the x99 platform.

Here is my question.

Ram that I have

4 sticks of 8gb EVGA ddr4 2400 ram.

Please note that these were bought in sets of 2.

If I add 2 more sets of 2 of the same ram to the x99 will it be quad channel or do you have to buy specific memory.

Maybe I am going about this wrong. will my current sticks work in a x99 mobo for dual channel or am I better off buying new ram.

The memory doesn't designate the channels. If you install 4 DIMMS in a Quad channel board 1 in each channel it will work in quad channel. Now Its preferable to buy a matched set and there is a chance these will not play together, but most likely they will work fine.

Channels used is determined by the memory controller, which is located on the CPU.

1 stick will give you single channel, 2 will give you dual, and 4 sticks will give you quad.

You don't have to buy specific memory.

You can add another two sticks but there is no garauntee that they will be compatible - some rams don't play nice together, despite having the same specs.

Since they are all the same make/model of RAM you should be fine. Like everyone said its the memory controller not the RAM that designates how many channels. The only thing you may hit when running all 4 sticks is having to loosing up some of the timings but if they are running fine today on stock timings then it should be fine on the x99 board as well. The slightly looser timings is the only real reason why one would want to buy a certified quad channel memory kit as those kits are tested to run at the rated timings with 4 sticks of memory.

I am lost. I have 4 Sticks total. The x99 platform has 8 slots. 4 on each side. I though you had to run even amounts on each side. If so I will be dual channel correct? Don't you have to have 8 sticks to run quad?

It depends on the motherboard where you place the 4 sticks for quad channel. Just look in the motherboard manual and it will say which slots to place the RAM in so its in quad channel with 4 sticks. No you don't have to have 8 sticks to run quad just 4. If you went with 8 sticks it would still be running in quad channel.

You do not. you need 1 stick for each channel. Those boards have 4 channels A, B, C, and D. And then 2 slots for each channel. You put 1 dim in the first slot of each channel and you now have quad channel. The manual clearly spells this out on the memory page.
