Hello all,

I was hoping someone could help me out with figuring which SSD my computer can take as an upgrade. It is an HP 840 G2. Right now it has 128gb SSD, SPECCY says it is currently a LITON LCH-128V2S. It says it is a SATA-III 6.0Gb/s

I am wondering if there are faster and better ssd's out there. I am also wanting to find something more in the range of 256gb for an ssd. Really appreciate the help!

Side note, do people notice any difference at all when going from 8GB memory up to 16GB or is it just overkill and I won't notice anything? I don't do any video editing or any gaming.

AND....where can I get just 1 of those black rubber toggles that goes in the middle of the keyboard? I don't and will never use it, just very irritating that isn't there. AGAIN THANKS!

Solution
This laptop only has 1 M.2 and 1 SATA. I looked it up in the manual for it. It DOES Support NVMe but honestly UNLESS you are doing things like Video editing or running a big SQL database or copying and moving VERY Big files to and from the NVMe there is NO point in spending money on a NVMe. In the real world you WILL NOT see a difference. Even for gaming, streaming, basic video encoding (1080p and below) and normal apps. IF you start editing something like 4K Plus then yes get a NVMe and it will help but otherwise don't bother with it.

If you NEED space, get a 256/512 M.2 SSD NOT NVMe and then get like a 1-2 TB hard drive for storage or buy a bigger SSD as M.2 only goes up to i think 512 (they may be up to 1TB now)...
The LCH-128V2S is fast on the read but slow on the write (120mb) honestly unless you are doing a lot of saving/video editing/etc then yea a faster SSD would be better. The read speed is rated for 520MBps which you won't get much faster.

It also takes M.2 SSD (NOTE IT TAKES SSDS NOT NVMe's which is PCI Express Based) So like if you were to get a Samsung 850 Evo/Pro you could get in either M.2 or 2.5 inch. M.2 goes up to like 512 while 2.5 goes to 4Tb. You can do either one or maybe even both not sure (Do a M.2 for OS and a normal HDD for storage?)

If you don't game, dont do video editing, you won't see a huge difference in the upgrade on RAM.

You mean the rubber cover for the pointer stick? Might want to check out ebay

all ssds connected via sata 3 will run at a maximum read speed of 550megabytes per second, perhaps 500 on write more or less

the cheaper the ssd, the slower it will work

the sata 3 imposes the limit

if you want faster speeds, your laptop must support m.2 ssds, this is a new technology, your laptop, this one right?

http://www8.hp.com/h20195/v2/GetDocument.aspx?docname=c04472796

seem to have two m.2 slots, so you can remove the one you have and put a 480gb, the m.2 should runt at least at 1700megabytes on read

on that file it says they sell that model with up to 512 gbs m.2 drives, so that 480 should work well for you

have you opened the laptop and checked if you have in use a ssd or a m.2 drive?

about ram, your laptop seems to be a i5 or i7, 2 cores and 4 threads, 8 gbs sounds good but if you can put 16 gbs, that will give you all the space you might ever need on it, if you can find a decent ram module, 8 gbs, put it inside and just use and abuse that laptop

the plastic thing, is a pointstick

it is a old pointing technology in use by lenovo and hp for their enterprise models, for users that like that and hve used it since 1995, if you don't like it, you can remove the rubber and leave the plastic part, it is harmless

Here are the two pictures I just took of the inside. You can see the empty slot that says SSD.

in fact, you have a ssd in the 2.5 inch bay right now, right? the one that came with that laptop

then yes, i would add a as big as possible m.2 drive, install windows in it and leave the 2.5 inch drive for your data files or replace it with a 1 tb western digital blue hard disk for space

it completely depends on your budget

Thank you very much for your help. I found at a local computer store they have a 256gb m.2 2260 that will fit in my slot, and I will just keep that 128gb SSD 2.5" as like you said, extra storage. Dumb laptop didnt come with the screw for the m.2, but guy at computer shop said he had one for me.

didn't came with the screw?

that is very uncommon!

well, anyway, you can take one borrowed from other part, iirc, if you can't get from the seller the screw, you can take one form the ssd cage, it usually has 4 of those, just check if it fits without problems, if it does, no problem

I do have another question.

I have an HP Envy 24 n-014 all-in-one desktop. Love this computer except the crappy 1Tb 5400rpm HDD that is in it. I am going to put an SSD in it as well. On HP website on the specs it does say it has an m.2 slot for ssd. Would be nice to do the same thing and put an SSD in the m.2 slot and keep the 1TB for storage if I need it. I can't find anywhere for the life of me which size m.2 fits in this model of desktop all in one pc. Any ideas?

most m.2 are the same size, very few use the short version of ssd, usually comes with the standoff for all the 4 sizes, most m.2 ssds will be as long as the third or fourth

we can't be sure untill you open the machine and see it for yourself

other idea could be move the slow 1 tb from that aio to the laptop and put the ssd from the laptop into the aio, what do you think?

what do you use more

Oh that is a thought. I do use the AIO more. And 128gb SSD on my AIO would be fine with me because i also have a 1.5TB external HD as well. Thanks for that idea. Then all I need is to buy 1 m.2 256gb for the laptop
