You shouldn't have had any problems because of the gfx card. I suspect you may have too weak a PSU. Or software conflict issues.
The fastest card today that does not require a 6-pin connector is the GTX 1050 Ti. But be careful. A few do indeed require a 6-pin. You have to choose carefully.
