Help with stability issues across several games

Hello guys. Hoping you all can help me troubleshoot. Here is my system:

Everything is default speeds. No overclocking.

i7 3770k
Asus P8Z77-V
32GB RAM
EVGA GTX 980
Win 10 x64

BIOS, Drivers, OS patches all up to date.

I am having the same issue across several games recently: Battlefield 1, XCom 2, Recore, Mirror's Edge Catalyst, and a few others.

Other games are rock solid and I have no issues: The Division, Dishonored 2,Forza 3, Titanfall 2, Overwatch, Rise of the Tomb Raider.

With the games that have a problem soon after launch or soon after getting into the actual game engine my screens go black. Sometimes the sounds keep going other times there is a 1-2 second glitch/static sound as the screen goes to black.

My only way to recover is to manually power off/power on the PC. Most of the games with the issue leave no events in the eventlog (though Xcom 2 does leave a generic app error in the eventlog).

I've tried multiple monitors. Uninstalled/re-installed games... turned down settings (happens whether at 1080p or 4k (I don't run much at 4k).

My temps all seem OK. Video card tops out at 77c under load and the CPU mostly stays between 35c and 50c.

Even though my system is still fairly strong spec-wise, I am considering a full rebuild. My plan is to wait for the 1080ti/ Vega cards release (possibly Ryzen, we'll see). Though these issues are driving me crazy.

The system is stable outside of hard crashing on the games I mentioned. I run some heavy loads in my VM LAB (reason why I run 32gb of RAM).

Thanks for reading all of this. I really hope someone has some things to try. I've checked out forums for each of those games and all have instances of people with this problem but no solutions.

I do sometimes. Most of the time I manually set them (I dislike motion blur and some vignetting) and tune other features. If I run into issues I will let the GeForce experience optimize. In the case of the games with issues I have tried both manually setting them and Optimized settings from Nvidia.

This has been an ongoing issue that has probably gone on for over a year across multiple gpu drivers. I originally thought it was just something with Frostbite engine games (Mirror's Edge/BF1) but it's starting to creep up in other areas.

Like I said in the OP, most games (and more demanding games) are rock solid. I can play Doom at 1080p at ultra settings or 1440p with a mix of high and ultra with no issues and good FPS. Same goes for other demanding games like Forza Horizon 3 or Gears 4.
