Still fine for making back ups of anything. I still enjoy installing games from CD/ DVD when I purchase hard copy or listen to some good old tunes from CD.

If you think you need an optical drive then you should get one. I used one it install windows and burn some cds before I took it out of my system and just plugged in an external one when I needed to do something with DVDs or CDs

Unless you plan or have the need to create any disk based media Such as CD audio disks or Dvd video disks.
Then you can get away with not buying one in essence.

Just use a Usb flash drive for the installation of a windows Os ect.

Many people don`t bother, but I myself have one fitted to the system case, just in case it is needed from time to time.
The other option is to buy a Usb based external Cd/ Dvd rom drive and have it for such a case where drivers ect need to be installed from time to time.
