I recently got an gtx 970 and im considering overclocking it

looking at msi afterburner i see that i can limit the card by temperature or power, so im thinking about pushing the core and memory clocks to the highest it manages to stay stable (probably 1500mhz boost / 8000mhz or less) and power limit to max (106%) and simply leave the temperature limitation on 80ºc
this way i believe i will always have the maximum power i can get from this card without pushing it above temperatures i dont fell comfortable with, and the card will downclock itself everytime it goes above the thermal limit, giving me the maximum performance year-round

am i doing it right?

my pc:
gtx 970 pny blower fan
i7-3770 3,4ghz
pci-e 2.0
2x4gb 1600mhz
corsair 450W

Solution
Just take the power draw right up. Voltage too. Then use Kompressor to raise the OC in increments until you start to see issues. When you do it'll get locked at stock settings until you reboot. Temps were never an issue. The OC will fail before it overheats most likely.

I achieved 1500MHz easily on my 970 but couldn't quite get to 8000MHz.
