I'm using Asus RT-AC51U wireless router for a year now. Recently it began giving me trouble connecting to internet. It shows WAN IP to be 0.0.0.0 also many times displays message 'Network cable is unplugged 'instead of cable being plugged.

However this problem is not permanent ,sometimes it just picks up wan ip and works fine.
Sometimes it shows network cable is unplugged but then also it connects to internet .

I called up my ISP narrated the whole story , they inspected cable replaced RJ-45 connector checked the line length but it did not resolve the problem, everything is fine from their side. I tried hard resetting, factory default settings, latest firmware version i.e. Firmware version 3.0.0.4.380.3625 but nothing has resolved the issue .

Router is behaving strangely connecting to internet sporadically . Please suggest solution

Solution
Plug the network cable from the Microtik device into the WAN port (single port by itself in middle of router).
Login to router and go to WAN settings and change WAN Connection Type to Automatic IP.
Change all the Yes/No options on that page to YES, Authentication is None and there is nothing in Special Requirement from ISP.
Reboot Microtik device and then router and see how that goes.
Is your modem a modem only, or modem router combo? If modem/router combo then issue could be with the modem/router assigning DHCP.

Is internet stable by bypassing the router and plugging PC directly into modem (will need to power cycle modem).

If you have modem only and that works stable with PC connected directly to it then the issue can only be the cable between the modem&router or the router itself. You have already tried factory resets and upgrading firmware so it is hardware and not software and thus there is nothing else you can really do besides replace the router.

it's only a router not a modem. I recently claimed for warranty , during warranty claim period i was using TP-Link router borrowed from a friend for a month and it worked flawlessly . After getting the asus router replaced with a new one sealed pack, i connected back and again the same problem is coming up on the new asus device too.
I cannot understand what's the issue.

Interest how the tp-link works flawlessly and yet a new replacement of the 51u does not.
Are you using the same cables and evertyhing ONLY piece of equipment that has changed is the router?

I have a AC68P and it has worked flawlessly for me (actually the best consumer grade router I have ever had/worked with) but I know some asus modles have had their issues.

I also had this problem on my new Asus RT-AC51U.
After a day or so the internet stopped working and got a 0.0.0.0 WAN address.

My solution:
Check under WAN, at the bottom, "Special Requirement from ISP".
Check if your router has a field called Clone MAC address and make sure it is blank.
Save, reboot..

cables are all same , just plugged out the asus one and plugged in TP-Link device to the same connection . Also, a month is a long time , no fault during that period as the one i'm getting on asus. Bizarre problem .

Unix07--
Clone MAC address field is already blank under the "Special Requirement from ISP".
I already checked it . WAN IP sometimes goes as 0.0.0.0 , otherwise it gets valid WAN IP . Also i get message on router homepage occasionally that 'Network cable is unplugged' and during that time webpages do not open on connected device .
Thing is that i got a brand new asus device as replacement and it's behaving the same . i checked the connection on other company routers but they work absolutely fine . i cannot diagnose the problem.

May I ask what kind of internet you have? I haver fiber and did some settings in the WAN tab / IPTV tab to make internet work. Let me know and I'll check what kind of settings you may need.

My ISP is sikka broadband . They do not provide fiber cable connection to my home . They provide wireless internet connection through a tower located some kilometers away . At my home on rooftop they have installed a wireless device named 'Microtik SXL Lite 5' whose details you can find accessing the link https://routerboard.com/RBSXT5nDr2

It receives the signal from their transmitting tower and through this Microtik device lan cable emanates having RJ-45 connector which plugs into the WAN port of my router .

Code:
It is not just a typical ADSL modem/router in my opinion. It can handle several types of internet connections.

Gaurav, what kind of connection settings do you have setup in your WAN settings? Is it setup up to obtain an IP address automatically? Maybe a screenshot of your WAN/LAN settings would be handy..

Isn't the Microtik SXL Lite 5 already getting a IP adress from your provider using PPPoE? Already checked the Microtik SXL Lite 5 settings?

Maybe I think you must try different settings in the WAN connection type.

Let's try first
Try Obtain IP Automatically in the WAN connection type. If that doesn't work, try to put in the LAN cable that is coming from the Microtik SXL Lite 5 in to a LAN port of the Asus Router to enable switch mode. Check if this creates a internet connection.

Plugging cable from Microtik device in LAN port of router instead of WAN port does not makes an internet connection . Also after plugging the cable in LAN port i'm not able to access router home page, it simply does not open .

Also i'm not allowed to do changes in the firmware of Microtik device , my ISP does not provide any such privileges .

I think it is a program like a VPN. Any software that acts as a server or reroutes to a different DNS apparently can reset the adapter to 0.0.0.0. The only solution I have is to stop using whatever VPN or other software that is doing this.
