dual core vs quadcore but lower GHZ?

Just a question but should someone use a processor with 2.40ghz and 2 cores or 4 cores and 2.00 ghz. which would be better for gaming.

-2 as mentioned above it depends on the game.

Chances are the Dual Core doesn't have hyperthreading (with exceptions in recent Architecture), which means if the game makes use of hyperthreading and multi-core processing which most modern AAA titles do, then the Quad Core will be superior. If the game is older or less optimised and runs on individual core speeds then the dual core would be better.
All in all i would always recommend choosing a quad core at minimum for gaming if you can afford them. The only major exception is the new Kaby Lake i3's as they are Dual Core hyperthreaded gaming machines.

Obviously we would need to know what specific processors, but generally it depends on whether you are able to overclock. If you can, then obviously go with the quad core and overclock it.

It sounds like a hypothetical question and I think there is an assumption that everything else except core count and speed would remain the same because it's the only variables he mentioned.
