usually the single best card you can get is the best choice. However in titles that support SLI 2 gtx 1070s will out perform a single gtx 1080 in 2k/4k. Honestly if your going 2k I would just get the gtx 1080 if your going 4k though Then I might consider 2 gtx 1070s. I know this recommendation won't be popular on toms but as a 4k/SLI user myself (2 gtx 1080s) I can say for a fact one GTX 1080 is not enough in a lot of games for max settings with good filtering and AA. 2 cards is not always enough but it helps a lot. I play a lot of SLI compatible titles though I can't say if you do or not. Regardless if you don't mind the short comings of SLI then 2 gtx 1070s will give you a better experience at 4K then a single gtx 1080 when supported...

I also find SLI usualy is only supported in games that DO NEED 2 cards to max out. So SLI/CF can well be worth it if your a max settings with high resolutions enthusiast like myself.

thanks for ur time , u mean a gtx 1070 sli for 2k is overkill so u consider to get a single 1080 ?
the problem is that i saw a lot of benchmark for gtx 1080 on 2k and some games the 1080 cant stay at 60fps it will go down to 50 or even 40 fps like the division ,gta v
iam not planing on upgrading my gpu for like 3 or 4 years so what u suggest ?

If you're going to shoot your wad all on the best current options out there I can't argue too much with AtomicWARs suggestion but it would be better to know your current system specs, monitor and resolutions you're planning to run.

I have the system in my sig and you see the card I decided to go with. My plan is to wait for Nvidias Volta release and get the fastest card available from that gen. I can do that because I'm not currently maxing my system with 4k res although I'm set up to do so. Rumors have it that Volta could possibly be rushed out earlier that the original launch date of q1 2018 to Q2/Q3 2017. I hope this is true as long as they dont cut corners to meet the earlier launch date. Time will tell.

It's not overkill for me at 2K but I am admittly the top 1% in power users in regards to gaming. For me A game isn't maxed out unless not only are the settings in game set to ultra but I also have 16x by 8x (min) filtering and AA running, usually set manually in control panel for 60HZ vsync play. Most users don't mind dropping some settings, filtering or AA to make it work. I do mind, lol. The biggest reason I game on PC is for the fidelity it offers over console and vast keyboard/mouse support in games. If you are like me and demand the highest settings with the highest filtering/AA then no 2 GTX 1070s are not overkill for 2K.

i run 2 980ti in sli in 2k on a 165hz monitor and its not overkill 1 980ti got me 100 fps 2 got me around 180 or so in bf1
giving that the 1070 and 980ti are about the same speed you can expect the same
