I'm torn a bit while pricing out some options for a new rig. I'm trying to figure out if it makes sense to go Kaby Lake with a 7700K which a higher clock and less cores, or a 6950X with a lower clock and more cores.

I plan on doing creative work with some 3D and VFX, previously coming from a lower clock multi-core system I was originally thinking I'd go higher clock quad core but now I'm not sure. I'm planning to do some GPU based rendering with RedShift with one or two 1080s so I'm not sure which direction I should go and looking for any advice.

For 3D and VFX, more cores will benefit in the long run, as they need numerous cores to fire simultaneously than single cores at higher clock rates.
Having said that, whether you need all of 10 cores at 3ghz for that is debateable. I would even consider the 6850k with 6 cores @3.6ghz with hyperthreading and boost that to 3.8ghz.

I'll look into the 6850K. I guess what I wonder about is if I'm going to be using GPU based rendering, which prior 3D rendering was what I'd mostly use the multiple cores for. Just not sure if it's worth it.

well, the 6950x will serve you better in rendering and the 7700k will do better at games
I would suggest at max an 8 core i7 with higher clock speeds like the 6900k and will be cheaper than the 6950x
You can also try out a xeon perhaps ?

I want to build a Trading Computer with two monitors (to begin with may go up to 4 later). I want to build it so it's good for 4 or 5 tears. What do you all recommend the 6950x or 7700k? Then what.
