Is a pci-e mini half card into a pci-e x1 adapter better than all in one aftermarket wifi adapters

I have a Dell Optiplex SFF that the specs call for a mini half card (dw1540) I see these are usually used with laptops, but have also read that they are superior when joined with an adapter in desktop wifi use over regular all in one wifi adapters. What do you suggest, should I get the half card into the adapter or just use aftermarket wifi adapter? Thanks.

You'd still need an antenna (or two) to go with it. External antenna with appropriate connectors.
