CPU fan quit and not sure how long this had been going on --this has been a workhorse computer -- and overheating shut down unit -- cpu temp indicator said 120C just before it shut down -- cpu is intel quad 2.66 GHz -- replaced cpu fan -- and fan comes on but nothing else happens -- no video -- no beeps -- just silence -- only thing running is cpu fan and case fans. Asus P5Q MB -- green light is on boar but do not know how to determine if cpu or MB --Suggestions greatly appreciated

Honorable
From the looks of it, it seems the CPU might have gone out. At toms we have some posts where this was discussed earlier.

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/261145-31-perform-steps-posting-post-boot-video-problems

This will help you with identifying if the CPU is dead or not.
Also if when booting, try tapping on the Delete button or the F11 button to see if Bios is posting/showing up. If it is, its not an issue with CPU. Otherwise, 80% it is DEAD CPU.

I tried a different cpu but same result -- do not have a speaker in the case. Fans will run for about 30 seconds and then everything shuts down -- perhaps this indicates MB?

The good news is that it was the motherboard -- the bad news is that the new system is quite unstable. What I have now is the following --
Asus P5Q SE plus mb -- with latest bios
Intel 9550 -- 2.83 GHz quad core cpu
HyperX DDR2 8500 memory
Pony SSD 480 Gig HD

Everything except memory is new for me -- altho only the SSD is actually new. When I first assembled system, with old regular HD (Western Digital 500 gig) -- it would not boot and said I had a corrupted file. Called my University tech -- as they install windows and told him to do a repair install -- and then clone the HD on to the SSD. He said problem was bad memory and removed 2 gig -- I had the four banks filled with 2 gig sticks. He cloned the HD and reformated the old drive (which was unfortunate -- I just wanted it removed).

Now system boots and runs quite fast due to the SSD -- but not infrequently get BSOD -- and quite frequently outlook or work or firefox will freeze and shut down -- outlook says problem with a file -- but going thru their fix does not help -- tried a repair install of office and that did not help either. Univ tech suggested I might still have bad memory -- or bad MB etc and suggested I get a new computer. Do not have the funds for that.

Suggestions anyone?? Thanks
