PC won't start up after I touched something on the motherboard

Okay so I am a PC noob, so if anyone replies please make it understandable for someone who literally knows nothing. My rear case fan doesn't spin sometimes so I decided to open up my computer and find the cord because I thought maybe it wasn't properly in the socket or whatever. So I find it in the back but it's not plugged into the motherboard, part of it is plugged into something else. So I unplug that part and put it back in. Then I find the 3pin cord and look on the motherboard for where it might go assuming that's why the fan doesn't spin sometimes, I saw a part on the motherboard that might work so I put the 3pin on it and there was a mini spark I guess and the LEDs for the fan turned on and the fans spun for a second and then I took it away and it stopped. Me being stupid I did it again to see wtf it is and the same thing happened. Finally I put everything back where it was and closed my PC and now my PC won't start at all. I click the power button and nothing happens and I'm freaking out.

I'm guessing you have a fan that has both a 4 pin molex connector & a 3 pin fan connector & you've ended up plugging both of them in instead of just one.

Best case scenario it would have blown the fan header by running 12v into it.
Worst case blown the PSU I'd its a crappy unit with no protection circuitry.

I'd hope if I'm right & that fan was connected directly to the PSU via molex you didn't plug vthe fan connector into something you shouldn't have .

A direct 12v feed can do an awful lot of damage.

The rear fan has only 3 pins (which I think you specified) and this although it has 3 pins, needs to go in the 4 pin socket. Secondly, try switching your power supply off and leave it for a few seconds and then turn it on again.

Assuming the PC was shut down completely with the power pluc pulled out from the wall or UPS before you did this, After you switched on the PC, was the CPU heat sink fan on the top of the CPU spinning?

Also most intel motherboards come with 4 pin case fan and cpu fan connectors. If you have a manual for your motherboard, take a look at it and locate the Case fan connector and CPU fan connector pins. There will be graphical representation on the manual.

if your lucky the mb is shut off in safty mode due to a dead short. sounds like you tried plugging a fan into one of the sound card ports. with power off and unplugged from the wall look for the cmos jumpers on the mb and clear the cmos. if the mb is fine it should post again.

Yes. The CMOS clearaing should work if it is just a bobo lock. So look for a small Circular (looks like a bigger watch battery) plate like thing on the mobo. Take a small pin or better a plastic pick or something to pull the CMOS battery from its socket. then Also remove the RAM from its slot and then reinsert both and then start the PC. Do this after unplugging the CPU from the PSU or the wall.

If his PSU has multiple 12V rails, then, this possibility is much less. Since one rail will go into the CPU and all the others to everything else which needs it. There are different types of 12V rated rails. If the Case fan OP is referring to has a 3 pin molex mail connector, it will only go into a compatible Molex femail connector either from the PSU directly or through a splitter or or which is directly connected to the PSU. In either case, these connectors are designed to deliver just enough power to the case fan if used for them. I don't think that these molex connectors could be connected to ant other of the Rails.

^senseijtitus - I think maybe you're misinterpreting what I'm saying.

Some prefitted case fans have both a 3 pin fan connector & a molex for people who don't have enough fan headers.
If the fan is plugged into the psu molex & you then plug that 3 pin plug somewhere on the board you shouldn't you can absolutely short something & push 12v into it.
Plugging a fan header on the board & molex simultaneously wouldn't do any damage , plugging the fan cable onto a CMOS jumper or similar very likely could cause damage.
