Hello there!

I've been using the same PC for over 10 years now and we've chugged along just fine but I've found myself in a position where I have the money now to replace 'Old Faithful' and XP :S

I'm terribly concerned about making bad decisions in this regard, which has left me making no decision. Unfortunately, I really have no idea what I'm doing as I'm 10 years behind the technology.

I'm willing to spend up to £500 but would rather not have to go that high.

Anyway, what I'm looking for from the machine is the ability to get much more into music recording/production, some video editing, and it would be great to play 'newer' computer games but I don't need to be able to play upcoming releases at max functionality (I've got 10 years of games to catch up on, right?)

I would hugely appreciate someone who knows their butt from their ulna to take a look here and let me know if I'm on the right track or throwing precious pennies out the window? Thanks verrrry much for any help/for reading my blabbering on.

I was thinking something like this, but again I have no idea if it'll be any good - I'm planning on buying Win7 from Amazon as from shopping around it to be ridiculously cheaper than getting it with PC - I also have a monitor/keyboard/mouse)

Ideally I'd prefer to do the 'custom build' with somewhere like PCSpecialist, but it's quite terrifying and I don't want to screw it up. I'd looked at something like this:

Case -PCS ENIGMA 6003B BLACK CASE
Processor (CPU) -Intel® Core™i3 Dual Core Processor i3-6100 (3.70GHz) 3MB Cache - SPECIAL!!
Motherboard - ASUS® H110M-R: Micro-ATX, DDR4, LG1151, USB 3.0, SATA 6GBs

Graphics Card -1GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GT 730 - DVI, HDMI, VGA
1st Hard Disk - 500GB SATA-III 3.5" HDD, 6GB/s, 7200RPM, 16MB CACHE
1st DVD/BLU-RAY Drive - NOT REQUIRED
Power Supply - CORSAIR 450W VS SERIES™ VS-450 POWER SUPPLY

Thanks again to anyone who read all of this/helps me out! x

Edit - Just realised the Amazon deal on Win 7 has passed, doh! Also looking at this with Win 7 included http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/fujitsu-esprimo-p556-core-i3-6100-4gb-500gb-dvd-sm-win10p-win7p-vfyp0556p735ogb/version.asp

How serious are you about music and video editing. Are we talking light editing of family videos or serious semi-professional work, because that will make a very big difference in the type of PC you need. Video editing can be very CPU heavy work. If you are doing a lot of it you will want to step up to a more powerful processor.

Another thing to consider is if you are doing very light work and have minimal gaming demands you may want to look at getting a laptop. If the mobility that it offers is useful to you it becomes a good choice for those who aren't interested in playing the latest games or doing serious workstation tasks.

Hi! Yeah, nothing too intensive as far as video editing - Pretty much for my own/friends enjoyment!
I considered a laptop but I'm a desktop girl through and through. I can replace the PSU and know where things are, I don't think I'll be able top keep a laptop alive for 10 years haha Thanks for the response! Oh and the music recording/production is probably the most important point for me - but I can run Adobe Audition and FL pretty fine on my old machine so I'm not incredibly concerned!

Just for the fun of it I put together a PC build that would suit your needs. I unintentionally ended right up at the edge of your price ceiling.

As for the build you listed it will work fine. The one thing you may want to watch out for is that the motherboard you picked only has 3 outputs for sound and lacks the necessary connections for the full 5.1 surround sound (this is very common on cheaper motherboards). This was one of the requirements that I was looking for in a motherboard for you (it has 7.1 surround). Also an aftermarket cooler is unnecessary, the cpu will come with one and it will work fine, you would only need to buy one if you are overclocking.

Replace that PSU you chose and swap it with this, it's much better in terms of pricing as well as coming from a brand I trust immensely. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA1N83U90894&cm_re=evga_psu-_-17-438-015-_-Product

DO NOT USE A H/Z/Q170/150 ON A 7TH GEN CHIP! Most of their BIOS versions aren't updated yet! It probably wouldn't even Post!
