hello guys

I have an ancient Sony Vaio Labtop (VPCF1)

with core i7 740QM (4 cores)
8 GB RAM DDR3 (MAX 8 GB)
Nvidia GT 425M
320 HDD (5400 RPM) MAX transfer rate 86 MB/s
16" display 1600x1200

I want to replaced it with another sony vaio (svf1432acew)

Core i7 4500U (2 cores)
8 GB RAM up to 16 GB
750 HDD
Nvidia GT 740M (+ the Intel HD 4000 when not running games or somthing)
14" display 1080x1920

i will pay above my labtop a small amount ( about 100$)

I use MATLAB alot and i mean alot like 24/7
and for games i play league of legend time to time and Tropico 5

do you recommend this upgrade?

i have no other choices like another labtop or somthing becuase both labtops are used and both are good

Solution
In that case, yes, it will be a good change. Looking a bit into Matlab information, not all functions support multithreading, so you could benefit from the higher clocks of the 4500U.

But the main benefit would be the battery life and energy consumption.

From my point of view, if your actual laptop is running fine, just go for an SSD.
The 4500U will benefit in power usage, but in raw performance I think that the 740qm would be faster (at least in multithreaded applications).
Gaming wise, the 740M would be much faster as the 425M.
If you have the opportunity, look for quad cores intel cpu, like i3 6300HQ or i7 6700HQ (or the kaby-lake equivalents 7300HQ and 7700HQ).

Best regards

the electronic market where i live is on fire the prices are super high.

ok to give a clearer view my current laptop (740QM) performance are pretty good for me it does exactly what i want my only two problems are the charge it hold only 2 hours max ( and the battery state is excellent) the other one is the size and wight which bother me a lot as a carry it with me to college every day. honestly i don't care much about the battery, i'm okay with plunging it in charge.

i don't want to lose performance and i'm not sure of the piratical different between the two laptops
I read that the different between 740QM and 4500U is only 3% here : http://www.game-debate.com/cpu/index.php?pid=1888&pid2=596&compare=core-i7-4500u-2-core-1-8ghz-vs-core-i7-740qm-4-core-1-73ghz

i'm okay if it's only 3% but i don't know how this will effect my working on MATLAB

Thank you for your replay it was very helpful :)
