8GB + 4GB, or just single 8GB?

My mother's PC has a single 4GB DIMM currently. I happen to have an extra 8GB DIMM, same brand/timings. Would it be better to add the 8GB DIMM, giving her 12GB, or is it safer to just replace the 4GB with the 8GB DIMM?

RAM can be trickey

The ideal is having a matched kit for the ram in your computer as they are cut from from same piece of silicon and are fully compatabile with one another.
Even mixing kits has the chance of incompatability.

Now I have mixed oem and aftermarket chips all the time and the vast vast majority of time it works just fine.
There is just always that possibility that they wont.

So just test them out with both in, if it is totally stable great, if not just run the 8gb chip.
