How to access Task Manager?

Running Win 7 Ultimate and I use Task Manager quite a bit as my system won't release memory quite often for some combination of Firefox and my encoding program (Xillisoft). Recently, somehow task manager started displaying "My Service List" instead of the Memory Usage Data and the "End Program" box I use all the time rather than a reboot of the whole system.

I assume there "should be" a drop down menu somewhere to switch between fucntions, but I have clicked and looked everywhere and can't find it. A hard reboot brings up the same screen...rather than revert back to system usage.

Google turns up ZERO hits which is kinda strange?

Any ideas?

I can take a screen shot, but don't know how to display it as part of this answer. Basically, instead of a list of services and how much memory they are using, the screen now shows a Heading of: Current List....My Service List.xml....Stop All in List. Then all the services of the computer are shown as running or stopped. Current list is not changeable but the other two can be clicked on for other functions...none of them getting me back to what I think most people use Task Manager for? There is also a "Services" button at the lower right hand corner that will open another screen and menu of no help at all. I've clicked all over the page in "blank" areas looking for a hidden menu. Can't find anything.

I think "performance Tab" is exactly what I'm looking for.... but I can't find it. Where is it? Logically, it should be in the clickable window that shows "My Service List"...I should click on that to switch to Performance Tab...but all it does is tab from top to bottom of the running services. this is acting like a corruption of the registry and some key is missing?

I just tried "Ctrl + Shift + Esc. This keyboard shortcut immediately launches the Task Manager, no option selection necessary. ... " but it opened to the "My Service List" as well.

Looking at the service list I see: "Steam Client Service" which is stopped. I wonder if that is why I have never been able to download a game from them?..Actually, I can download but haven't been able to get them to start. I'm going to click it to "Run" and see what happens later. I looked for "Performance Tab" but no such entry running or stopped appears. I mention a missing registry key as going into the registry was one of the ways to get Task manager to start. It was no help as Task Manager "starts"...just won't show the performance tab.

Where is the "link to" function? Looks like "full edit functions" appears after posting a message and you want to edit it? I don't recall the link function. but now I will look again. edit: found it, I assume. Let me try imgur. I'll be back

Trying to set up my screen shot, I right clicked on one of the services and a menu command was "Go to service." I clicked on that and the desired Performance tab listing of services and Memory usages appears. So.... its fixed. I still don't see any tab for "Performance" and where "My Service List" used to appear, it now says "My Kill List.xml"...which is exactly what I use Task Manager for. Not a very intuitive way to access the list....but its discovered. I wonder if my Task Manager is actually broken in some way and this is just a kludge?

anyway............thanks for the help. its fun to click around and learn how your machine actually works..... if you don't turn it into a brick?

Quaidan: I think thats it. I did "click around" but maybe not quite right for what else I did instead? Right now my machine is half frozen but probably will fix itself when I kill Firefox and Xillisoft. I've written those instructions down and will use them first next time I get trapped on the wrong page.

Thanks very much.

I followed the instructions at Quaiden's link and got access to the tabs. Nice to see those tabs and options. I now have full access and functionality. Clicking on Task Manager now though still takes me to "My Kill List.xml" but I can use the "four key command" to get the original screen.

Kool.

EDIT: and just now I double left clicked on the top far left corner and got the full service tabs and controls...... and now Task Manager opens fully and I get to choose the Performance tab. system totally fixed. But if I close task manager while on the Kill List, then next time it will open to that page....which is what I want.

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER. Thanks for giving me some of yours.

IDEA; HEY MICROSOFT: Why you hiding the fix by not having a Button on the top left corner of the page? Why is this a secret?
