Hey,

So I'm making a brand new computer, and I've encountered a small issue, on which I may only need clarification. So I've bought the MSI PC MATE Z170A motherboard, and I'm seeking out a solid state hard drive, I have come across some reasonably priced M.2 PCIe Drives, that aren't to be installed directly into the PCIe slot, I was wondering if there is any significant difference between M.2 and actual PCIe?

From what my research could gather M.2 seems to be just a form factor of the traditional PCIe, and that there is no significant speed difference when using one connection type over the other, rather the speed difference is within the specifications of the solid state drive itself, is this correct?

Thank you for your time,

The only differences with m.2 and a PCIe slot is that one is smaller and doesn't deliver as much power. (m.2 drives don't need the full 75w a slot would provide.) Otherwise, they are identical. They use the same PCIe lanes and deliver the same bandwidth. It's just a form factor change.

You are correct in general.

The M.2 connection is acually just a different connector, still connected to the PCIe bus. There is no difference in speed related to the connection. You can also get a PCIex4 adapter card if the motherboard doesn't have the m.2 connection.
