First, I just had my gigabyte motherboard cook due to lightening strike - It killed the board and my cpu everything else tested works fine. So now I am in the market for a new processor and motherboard. My previous setup was a 1150 I5 4690K it was fine for what it does but now that I have to replace my board anyway, what do you all think of the I7 4790K it uses the same ram so that is a plus - My other 2 options are the 6700K and 7700K. I did enjoy my previous cpu and board but the board is no longer available - 10 sata port boards are tuff to find too.

So TL : DR I need a new CPU/MB and I am looking at the I7 4790K, 6700K and 7700K. What are your preferences since they all seem very close in capability.

It has the exact same performance at the same clock speed kaby lake is just skylake with higher base clocks. Typically they oc higher than their Skylake counterparts. There is basically zero price difference might as well go for the 7700k just for the newer chipset (better m2 support and possibly cool optane stuff down the line)

6700k.

the 4790k is a bad value and you would be buying out dated hardware. not that it is a bad cpu it is still very fast but it is a bad use of your money.

7700k if you want to have the newest stuff and want to get a chipset that just came out.

6700K best for your money, best in price per performance.. its an awesome CPU and I really think you should get that one.

I'd go with the 7700k same price as 6700k and newer chipset which overclocks a lot better. Don't get the 4790k downgrade in performance and z97 is almost dead.

I hadnt seen a good review on the new I7's yet is it really an improvement over the 6700K? CPUBoss doesnt have it yet and a few of the OC sites show the 6700K has better overall performance BUT most of thier stats are from Oct/Nov nothing in the last 2 months.

right kaby lake has no IPC improvement over sky lake. difference is clock speeds. you can oc skylake and thus negate any clock speed difference out of the box. anyone saying otherwise has not read any actual reviews such as this one tom's just did. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/intel-kaby-lake-core-i7-7700k-i7-7700-i5-7600k-i5-7600,4870.html

but with that said as the price is almost the same why bother with skylake if you have to upgrade your memory anyway, why not also upgrade to the newest 270 chipset.

Seems 4.8 is virtually assured with kaby most easily get 4.9 on good boards. Skylake OCS a bit worse even more so on lower quality boards. If I were building today I'd certainly build kaby as there is no downside. I'll be building one soon but I'm waiting for ryzen to hit the market to see what it's all about first.

i'd agree. no real downside to kaby lake so would be the best buy unless you find a super combo or something with skylake. a big price drop nudges it back to skylake but at reg price, kaby lake is the better deal.

i am also looking forward to zen and whatever it brings before doing any major build. i'm good where i am at and don't need to upgrade so can afford to sit back a bit and see what they bring in. i'd love to be able to go AMD again for the cpu if they bring it at the right price and performance ratio

ok you have convinced me on the 7700K, should I use my corsair 115i aio cooler on it or should I move to something else? I found a combo that has the 7700K with the Hero IX motherboard so that is my setup.
