My "WD my Passport" external harddrive suddenly stopped working last night. I heard a strange clicking noise from the harddrive but thought nothing of it. The drive is not working despite having worked flawlessly up untill now. The Harddrive has not been dropped or thrown in any way. I have tested the drive on both Mac and PC and i can't access the files on either system.
If the files where unimportant I would just throw it away but i have stored client Work on it for two TV shows, one of which is due to air in 10 Days.

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to save the files without having to pay to much Money.

thank you.
Henry

Hi there Svenry,

That is really unpleasant. :(

There are a couple of possible causes for this clicking sound:
- There is not enough power provided to the drive. You can use a different USB cable.
- If the issue persist, then most probably, the drive has some mechanical flaw. In that case, you will need to contact a data recovery company in case you want to retrieve the data. You can check WD's Data Recovery Partners out: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=xIDvaE

You should always back up the data you can't afford to loose.

Let me know in case you have some more questions,

Quite often the head is stuck to the platter or jammed up in the parking area. While you can open the drive to see whats going on and possible correct it, i would not trust it for anything important afterwards and you couldn't guarantee how long it would work for afterwards. The innards don't like being exposed to the minute particles floating around in the air...
