So here's a short story of what happened...
I made a newly built computer yesterday. I powered on the PSU and hit the power button on the case to power on the computer. Smoke emanated from the back of the motherboard from behind where the CPU is, and I unplugged the PSU immediately. It had a very strong smell of burning electronics.
I browsed online for answers, checked that I didn't use excessive thermal paste, double checked that nothing was stuck inside any connectors, made sure all connectors are in very snug, and made sure that no standoffs or screws could be causing shorting of any traces or components.
I have also sent an email to Newegg and ASRock. Newegg says that the most they can try to do is send me a replacement, and I haven't heard back from ASRock yet.
Here is an image showing the burning caused at the back of the motherboard, behind where the CPU is. (The greenish metal is the mount for the CPU cooler, which has non-conductive standoffs).
