Motherboard/CPU Compatibility question

Solution

Yes and No!! If I got correctly it will only support the new 7gen if the Bios is flashed to the version1.G or above, this Update allow the new 7Gen to be compatible with the Board. meaning if you under 1.G you wont be abble to use the new Processor and to update the Bios I think you may need a 6Gen processor.

But as far as I´m concerned the new Kaby lake is really not an improvement to the "Old" Skylake. So talking busines here, the i5 6600k Overcloocked to 4.6 Ghz will deliver very similar performance to the i7 6000/7700. if you´re building a new machine why not speend 20 bucks more and go for the newest. I would still recommend the i5 with a K and overcloock a max. there is no point in Buying a Z170 Motherboard and not buying a K processor (Unlocked). But overally I would say WAAIT for AMD, im not a big fan of AMD, they mess up the last years but it seems they´re maybe bringing something hot, if it´s not it will definitly force a price drop on the Green side.

EDIT:

Im not so sure about that, off course is compatible with the new 7gen But with the new Bios. they shipped 1000S of those boards and they´re stocked somewhere. if you´re unlucky you will get a board that was sitting 1 or 2 months on a dusty shelf and youwill have an outdated Bios, if you´re even unluckier the new 7gen won´t work at ALL with the old bios (Somethimes uncompatible CPU work with Motherboards, but with very limited performance). meaning you will be stuck, and you will need some one with a 6 gen processor just to update that dam Bios.

you lucked out on your mb. look at page 50 of the mb user guiild your mb has a usb flashback bios update.
all you need is a fat32 formated usb stick and to rename the newest bios for your mb that in the user guild. with the power off plug in the usb stick and hit the usb flashback button. it update the bios for you and you should be able to post.

Sorry for taking so long to reply, I was at work. My current version is 1.A0. I installed an i5-6600, boots fine, but i'm wondering if I should update my bios and hope that allows me to use my i5-7600. Any suggestions?

Hi Sirpres, If you REALLY wan´t an I5 7600k, than yes you will need to update your bios, I don´t have good experience with MSI bios, Last week I did a Bios update on an old am3+ board from MSI and this thing actually Bricked my Bios. I had luck I´m studiying micro engineering and I could solder a new Bios on the Motherboard myself, the MSI Update process is absolutly a joke and risky.

But talking money here, a 6600k and 7600k there are NO GAINS WHATSOEVER !!! the I5 7600k is like a stock overcloocked 6600k you would be getting 2~3 FPS, just because the Turboboost is 200mhz difference. It´s absolutly the same processors, keep the 6600k overclock to 4.6 you will even beat the i5 7600k stock, and move on. the i5 7600k is only for people who don´t have a coputer yet. but upgrading from Skylake to Kraby lake it´s a major money waste. cheers

From my perspective its not about the performance upgrade/downgrade, its about making the dam thing work. I ended up doing the bios upgrade and it went fine, but I will remember your advice for future builds. Thanks for your help.
