Motherboard with 4 memory slots. Only Using 2?

Motherboard has 4 memory slots. I want to purchase 2 sticks of 8gb now. and then purchase another 2 sticks in the future. Does this have any effect on the performance of the motherboard. Is it still capable of running smooth with 2 slots unused; as i have read somewhere that its more efficient when all slots are being run.

no the 4 slots are actually (unless an x99 board) 2 pairs of dual channel set, so a pair in , and a pair later is fine, just match memory make/model/speed when you do to spare you issues
