I just got a Samsung 850 Evo SSD and I plan on cloning my old HDD drive that has my OS on it to my new SSD. So far I understand the cloning process using software seems fairly easy. However, most of my questions are for after the cloning process is complete. I've read that after the clone you just remove the old HDD and put the new SSD into the sata port that the HDD used to occupy, boot up the computer, and it should run fine. The thing for me is what if I don't want to use the same sata port? I want to use the 6gb sata port for the SSD. The other thing that concerns me is settings in the BIOS menu. Do I have to change it to AHCI mode? and if so, when should I? I've read people have changed to AHCI mode before a fresh OS install to an SSD drive but what about when cloning? I've tried to look for steps of the process but I couldn't find much for my particular situation. I just dont want to screw anything up. Any advice, answers or questions would be great.

Thanks for the replies guys. I actually got everything to work without any issues on the first try. After cloning I set up the pc to be booted into safe mode. Then I swapped my old hdd for my ssd only I didn't put the ssd in the same sata port as the old hdd. I put the ssd in the 6gb sata port. I got into bios and changed the 6gb ports to ahci and change the boot order to boot from the ssd. I then booted into safe mode and then logged out and booted normally. Windows booted fine and there was my ssd listed in device manager and also the ahci controller was showing up. Double checked with Samsung software which said ahci mode was enabled. I'm just wondering if my hdd's should also be running in ahci mode or not. Because in my bios there...

Okay I can give a partial answer based on my experience of taking one of my older SSDs from my computer and cloning my laptop's boot drive. I did indeed install it to the same SATA port but even with that the computer didn't just automatically boot up. I had to run a windows repair to let it fix the boot setup and it has run fine ever since. I'd imagine the same thing would work with what you are doing. I just had to verify that the data on the old HDD was smaller than the size of my SSD since I was cloning from a 500 gig HDD to a 240 gig SSD.

I never got into the BIOS to change any of those settings to do what I did so cannot speak to that.

No big deal I guess. The only issue I've really come across so far is the read and write times for the ssd. They are supposed to be in the low 500's but I'm not even getting high 400 reads which is very frustrating. Idk maybe it's the bench marking software I'm using that's wrong or something. I'm going to try a couple others to see what happens. Thanks again guys.
