Looking to replace my really old HD 7770 with a $150 budget.

Right now I'm currently looking at replacing it with a 1050 TI that is exactly $150 but my friend keeps telling me that it's a piece of crap and that I should look into getting more powerful used gpus.

The current used gpus i'm looking at are GTX 780 for $120 (local seller about 3 miles away) and though it's $30 over my budget my friend recommends me to get a GTX 970 used for $180 (also a local seller). I'm having a really hard time deciding so let me know which one is the best bang for my buck in terms of power.

GTX1050Ti is a great GPU for the money. It's actually almost IDENTICAL to the GTX780 but pulls ahead slightly in newer titles and has more VRAM (4GB vs 3GB).

The newer Pascal (1000 series) have a number of advantages including:
- dynamic load balancing and pixel preemption (will be used in DX12/Vulkan titles to improve efficiency but also reduce STUTTERING)
- HDR support (needs new monitor)
- VR optimizations
- H265/HEVC codec support
- FANS SHUT OFF for less noise, and cards are still quiet under load

GTX970?
As per the graph it's about 40% faster than the GTX1050Ti. Hard to suggest one or the other, though a new card has a WARRANTY.

I don't know how much...

The GTX 1050 TI can't run all games at 1080p at ultra. With some tweaking though you can run most games medium-high. The GTX 970 for $180 is a great deal and a great card for 1080p gaming. The GTX 780 is pretty close to 970 in terms of performance but I would go with a 970 for $180.

I don't know how much difference Dynamic Load Balance will make in near future games either. Probably no more than 15%, but gaming might be smoother in some titles.

Those are the FACTS.

I don't know why, but the GTX1050Ti almost matched the GTX970 in ROTT. Perhaps DX12 and Vulkan can improve performance enough to match? Keep in mind this does NOT help existing games that don't use DX12.

DOOM and Hitman in DX12 didn't see much improvement though. Frankly, NONE of the titles are truly "DX12" in the sense that they've been designed with the new API truly in mind. NO GAME EXISTS YET that has done that.
