hello, i have a newish r7 370 2gb card, and in some games it's lacking fps unless i lower quailty, was wondering if it would be a good choice to upgrade to a 480 or a 1060, or should i stick with 370 for now and wait till new stuff comes out, any help would be great, thanks

With a weaker CPU I'd go with an NVidia card. We really would need to know more about your system.

BUDGET?

The R7-370 is an "okay" card. Here's how it stacks up:

It can do better vs NVidia (relatively) in titles that use DX12/Vulkan properly so that's more of a longer term benefit. Again, if the CPU is AMD or weaker Intel I'd go NVidia due to the more efficient DX11 drivers.

*Now use this summary comparison to calculate the VALUE (price vs FPS) and see how you compare. Assume 70% of the GTX960.

So a GTX1060 6GB will give you about 2x to 3x the performance depending on your CPU, game, and game settings.

Cards?
1) If reasonably good CPU, go with RX-480 8GB (Asus Strix is my favorite):

2) AMD or weaker Intel go with NVidia GTX1060 6GB:

I don't recommend less than 6GB of VRAM if budget allows.

i5 6600k oc 4.3ghz, 16gb 3000 ram, 240 ssd for gaming.

from what i was reading, some people say not to go past the 4gb or 6gb nvidia, cards since they aren't much better then the 4 and 3gb ones.

budget is around 250 if possible, 275 max.
